At Acorn Winery our passion is traditional field-blended wines. Our food-friendly wines fully express the fruit characteristics of the diverse grape varieties we grow at our Alegría Vineyards in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley.

To honor the land and maintain it for future generations, our farming is sustainable and labor-intensive. Inter-planting different varieties to be harvested together requires individualized attention to each vine. Hand tending, ten or more times a season, ensures a balanced crop and flavorful wines that are distinctive expressions of each vintage.

Vineyard and Winemaking Notes

As was standard practice in the 19th century, our Zinfandel vineyards contain a unique blend of inter-planted varieties that has evolved over the past 117 years. All the varieties in each vineyard block are harvested together and cofermented.
They interact and blend together from the day they are picked. This practice produces an intriguing and unusually complex wine. We honor the wisdom of the winegrowers who went before us by continuing their field blend tradition.

Extraordinarily focused individual attention is required to coax tiny yields of fruit from the oldest vines that provides the essence of our Heritage Vines Zinfandel. Close attention is also paid to the younger vines to limit their crop to produce fruit of comparable quality.

Because of the old age of most of the vines and because 2005 was an exceptionally cool growing season, we picked on three different dates as the
grapes reached optimal maturity. We chose a combination of barrels and yeasts to compliment and balance this vintage’s nuanced flavors. This wine is a tribute to our old vines, and the skill and experience of our consulting winemaker,
Alison Doran.

Tasting Notes

This dark beauty opens with seductive aromas of ripe blackberry, vanilla, and toasty oak. Smooth luscious layers of plum, black raspberry, cocoa, and spicy black pepper mingle with the essence of strawberry from the Carignane and Cinsaut. The Petite Sirah and Alicante provide subtle tannins and structure and add to the lingering flavors of dark-skinned fruit. Delicious now, and with aging
will continue to develop.

Composition

78% Zinfandel, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 10% Petite Sirah. The remaining 2% of the field blend includes Carignane, Trousseau, Sangiovese, Petit Bouschet,
Negrette, Syrah, Muscat Noir, Cinsaut, and Grenache.
