At Acorn Winery our passion is traditional field-blended wines. Our food-friendly wines fully express the fruit characteristics of the diverse grape varieties we grow at our Alegría Vineyards in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley.

To honor the land and maintain it for future generations, our farming is sustainable and labor-intensive. Inter-planting different varieties to be harvested together requires individualized attention to each vine. Hand tending, ten or more times a season, ensures a balanced crop and flavorful wines that are distinctive expressions of each vintage.

Vineyard and Winemaking Notes

An axiom is a self-evident truth. We call our Syrah “Axiom” because it is obvious from the first sip that this is a classic expression of Syrah. It reflects
the cool climate and long growing season at Alegría Vineyards that accentuates Syrah’s spicy berry character.

When we planted Syrah on the south slope of our hill in 1991, we inter-planted a small number of Viognier vines. The Viognier grapes are picked and co-fermented with the Syrah to enhance aroma, color, and fl avor. Aging the wine in a carefully selected mix of French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels added structure and notes of vanilla that enhance this vintage.

2005 was an exceptionally cool growing season. We waited until late October for the grapes to ripen fully, and our patience was rewarded. The combination of our microclimate, our careful selection of clones and barrels, and the skill and experience of our consulting winemaker, Alison Doran, created a luscious, full-bodied, ageworthy Syrah.

Tasting Notes

Ripe dark berries, baking spices, and smoky vanilla aromas introduce you to this alluring wine hinting at pleasures to come. Well-integrated tannins and oak create a smooth wine with dark chewy edges. Softening tannins surround luscious and intense flavors of rich berry, ripe plum, mocha, and caramel. Notes of cherry cola and leather round out the expansive finish. The Viognier contributes a floral essence and a softness to this robust and fullbodied wine. This earthy, yet sophisticated wine will develop with age.

Composition

A single vineyard field blend of 99% Syrah and 1% Viognier.
